Fred Harvey History Weekend 2019!!!

Join us October 25-28 for the tenth year of Fred Harvey History events at the New Mexico History Museum and La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe—and, for the first time, at the newly restored Harvey Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas, NM!

Fred Harvey History Weekend begins with two days of lectures at the New Mexico History Museum, from 12:30-5, October 25 and 26.
The lectures are free but to guarantee yourself a seat (and us a head count) please email us to RSVP at fredharveybook@gmail.com
as soon as possible with the names and email addresses of everyone in your party. This email will also put you on the list for updates on the weekend, and for future Fred Harvey History events.

Watch this space for a complete listing of lecturers and topics.

Saturday evening join us for the Fred Harvey Foodie Dinner, a truly historic Harvey-inspired meal to benefit the New Mexico History Museum’s exhibitions and public programming, and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Drinks and then dinner will be served in the grand ballroom at La Fonda on the Plaza. Top local chefs will reinterpret classic dishes that civilized the wild west, along with between course foodie history commentary from Chef John Vollertsen (Johnny Vee), bestselling author Stephen Fried, Harvey family members and surprise guests.

Recently featured on CBS Sunday Morning, the Fred Harvey Foodie Dinner is now in its third year, and it sells out very quickly.
Dinner is $150 per person, and each diner will receive a newly released piece of reproduction Mimbreno china by Mary Colter from HF Coors, and a print of “The Last Harvey Girls,” the beloved painting by Tina Mion.

Please use this link to RSVP for the Fred Harvey Foodie Dinner as soon as possible to assure that you and yours can join us for this event, which funds the weekend’s Harvey programming in Santa Fe.

Optional events, 10/25-26:
Friday 5:30-7:30 PM, annual Harvey weekend reception at Santa Fe Antiques, 1006 Marquez Place, no RSVP necessary

On Sunday, October 27, the Fred Harvey History Weekend moves to Las Vegas, NM, the original Fred Harvey city in New Mexico, beginning in 1879. There we will celebrate the official grand re-opening of the Castaneda Hotel, the very first of the large Fred Harvey mission style trackside hotels in the Southwest, which opened in 1898 and has been closed as a hotel since 1948.

The re-opening festivities begin at 1:30 PM at the hotel, with a talk about the rescue and restoration of the building by Allan Affeldt, followed by a tour.

At 3:00 PM, there will be an opening of a new art show by Tina Mion, “Midnight Muse,” at the Mayeur Projects Gallery. It includes paintings inspired by living and working in Fred Harvey hotels.

Both of these events are free and open to the public

That evening there will be a grand re-opening dinner at the Castaneda’s new restaurant, Kin. Reservation information will be posted soon.
Monday, October 28, there will be an informal wrap-up breakfast at the Castaneda Hotel.

Optional events 10/27-28: for guided tours of the Montezuma Hotel/UWC, on the site of the original Harvey-run hot springs health resort outside of Las Vegas, as well as Castaneda and other Las Vegas sites, contact Southwest Detours, (505) 459-6987
