Happy 177th birthday to Fred Harvey, the founding father of the American hospitality industry and the subject of my award-winning biography Appetite for America. To celebrate, I share with Fredheads young and old a never-before-seen picture of Fred as a young man. It is presumed to be from St. Louis in the late 1850s, and is part of the Daggett Harvey, Jr. collection (which I used for the book and has now been donated to the Chavez Library of the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe so other researchers can use it.)
