Please join us in Santa Fe April 1-2 for a very special weekend honoring Mary Colter, the design guru for Fred Harvey and creator of Santa Fe style. It’s a benefit for the New Mexico History Museum, organized by the museum and La Fonda Hotel, and I’ll be giving a new talk on Colter’s work for Fred Harvey, and her relationship with the underappreciated “Harvey Women”—Fred’s daughter Minnie Harvey Huckel, and his granddaughter Katherine “Kitty” Harvey.

The keynote lecture will be by Colter biographer Arnold Berke, whose excellent book I relied on to write Appetite for America, and there will also be a talk by Santa Fe architect Barbara Felix, who is responsible for keeping the renovations at La Fonda Hotel Colter-worthy.

Saturday evening, there will be a Q&A with Arnold and I, moderated by Fran Levine, director of the museum, and a gala Fred Harvey-theme dinner by La Fonda Chef Lane Warner. Those purchasing sponsor-level tickets will also attend a private dinner Friday night at Colter’s last home in Santa Fe.

Tickets are limited, so make reservations soon. Click here to buy tickets now.

Black Bart and I are looking forward to seeing you there.

One Response to “Mary Colter Weekend in Santa Fe!”

  1. Hi Stephen–

The Mary Colter Weekend sounds great. We were just in Santa Fe last month, though. In mid-January my wife and I left on a 10-day Fred Harvey trip into New Mexico and Arizona. My wife DID like Santa Fe best and wants to go back, though April is too soon for us.

This trip I detoured south to visit six new locations:

    El Paso, TX
    Las Cruces
    Rincon
    Deming
Phoenix [Union Station & Green Gables Restaurant]

Historic buildings still exist in all these locations, though you have to know where the moved the old wooden Lunch Room in Deming.

    Places re-visited:

Ash Fork [nice museum with an incredible model of the Escalante Hotel]
Williams [rode the train to the Canyon and back]
    Grand Canyon [stayed overnight]
    Winslow
    Painted Desert
    Gallup
    Santa Fe
    Las Vegas
Montezuma [We got in on one of the UW College’s rare Castle tours this time! The first one of 2011. Our very smart 13-year old tour guide mentioned giving you a tour.]
    Vaughn
    Clovis
    Slaton, TX

We spent the night in three Harvey Houses: “La Posada,” “La Fonda,” and Slaton, all of which I’d recommend to your readers.

We ate in five: El Tovar, Bright Angel, La Posada [“The Tourqouise Room” in the old Lunch Room], La Fonda [2 different places: “La Plazuela “and Mary Colter’s “La Cantinita,” which is now a French Pastry Shop], Slaton [a wonderful buffet breakfast for two in the old Lunch Room].

I thought I was following in the footsteps of Fred Harvey, but people kept bringing up Stephen Fried everywhere!

    Michael
